In a recent interview, women alumni are urging the federal government to prioritize inclusivity by implementing gender policies designed to dismantle societal stereotypes against women across various sectors. Their call comes in light of the government’s failure to sign the gender bill into law, which, according to these women’s advocates, hinders efforts to confront and overcome the negative stereotypes women face.
The alumni stress that the valuable contributions women make to society are significant and should not be overlooked. They argue that an inclusive society has far greater potential than a restrictive one. These comments were made during the second edition of the On the Road from Abuloma Conference (OTRFA) 2024, hosted by the alumni of the Old Girls Association of Federal Government Girls College (FGGC OGA) in Abuloma, Lagos.
In her keynote address, Chioma Afe, Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy, stated that women must take an active role in challenging negative biases to overcome them. She encouraged women to assert themselves and excel in their respective fields to help combat these stereotypes.
Chinwe Ikpoki, Chairperson of FGGCA OGA in Lagos, pointed out that stereotypes not only affect women but also have broader implications for the community and the concept of sisterhood. Additionally, Itoro Isong, National President of FGGCA OGA, called on individuals to consciously avoid becoming perpetuators of negative stereotypes against women.
Domo Kurukurubo, a travel management entrepreneur, emphasized the importance of keeping the conversation active, insisting that women must remain aware of the ongoing efforts necessary to achieve their goals.
