Ethel Kennedy, the widow of U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and a passionate advocate for human rights, is currently recovering from a stroke she experienced last week. Her grandson, former Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III, took to social media platform X to share an update on her condition, emphasizing the family’s dedication to her care.
“Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke in her sleep on Thursday morning,” Joe wrote. “She was taken to a local hospital, where she is now receiving treatment.” His message was echoed by his aunt, Kerry Kennedy.
At 96 years old, Ethel is not only the sister-in-law of former President John F. Kennedy but also the mother of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a former presidential candidate. At the age of 40, she became a widow following the assassination of her husband, who was serving as attorney general at the time. In memory of her late husband, she established the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights non-profit organization.
In a statement, Joe and Kerry reassured the public, saying, “She is comfortable, receiving the best care possible, and surrounded by family. As you may know, she is a strong woman who has led a remarkably fulfilling life. We are here looking after her.”
Ethel’s unwavering commitment to human rights, including her work with the Coalition of Gun Control, earned her the Congressional Medal of Freedom in 2014. When presenting the award, President Barack Obama remarked that her “love of family is matched only by her devotion to her nation.”
In their post, the Kennedy family asked for privacy as Ethel continues her recovery.
