In a recent interview, we explored the current landscape of Major League Soccer, with a specific spotlight on Austin FC’s ongoing difficulties. Joseph Lowery provided insights based on his latest MLS Power Rankings, revealing the significant challenges the Texas team is grappling with this season.
“Austin FC has really been struggling, and the numbers support that statement,” Joseph observed. “They’re sitting at the bottom of the Western Conference, especially when you look at their expected goal differential. With a -0.54 xGD per 90 minutes, they’re conceding over half a goal more than they’re creating in every match—it’s a tough position to be in.”
When I asked how the team has managed to remain in the playoff conversation despite such statistics, Joseph credited standout goalkeeper Brad Stuver. “He’s saving nearly a quarter of a goal more than expected per 90 minutes, which is truly impressive, particularly for a team that’s facing these challenges,” he explained.
As Austin’s sporting director Rodolfo Borrell prepares for his second offseason, Joseph underscored the urgency of the situation. “Big decisions are approaching for the front office. They need to secure a capable striker and a midfield playmaker. Currently, their core feels one of the weakest in the league, and fans are increasingly skeptical about Coach Josh Wolff’s future.”
Shifting focus, Joseph also discussed the rapid decline of St. Louis City, which went from leading the Western Conference last year to being on the brink of playoff elimination this season. “Their decline illustrates a harsh reality—losing key players like Nicholas Gioacchini and Jared Stroud without finding adequate replacements has hurt them. They’re just beginning to show signs of life again, thanks to some strategic moves in the summer transfer window.”
Meanwhile, the New York Red Bulls have not escaped scrutiny. Joseph noted the challenges fans are facing, particularly following the recent loss in the Hudson River Derby. “The management’s remarks about the slow development within the league have raised concerns, especially considering the Red Bulls haven’t clinched an MLS Cup or made significant playoff advancements since 2018. If they truly want to progress, they might need to explore solutions closer to home.”
On a brighter note, he examined the potential of Orlando City while expressing some reservations. “They’ve performed well in the standings, but they haven’t faced many top-tier teams this season. Their tactical adaptability is commendable, but the real question is whether that flexibility will hold up in the playoffs.”
At the top of the league, Joseph had clear thoughts on Inter Miami’s recent achievements. “With Lionel Messi leading the way, they’ve secured the Supporters’ Shield and are aiming for even more. However, we shouldn’t overlook the contributions from key role players like goalkeeper Drake Callender. Their accomplishments this season have been impressive, and moving forward, Miami’s blend of star power and strong support might just reshape the MLS landscape for years to come.”
As the playoffs approach, the league’s dynamics continue to shift, and all eyes will be on how these teams handle the escalating pressure.
