In a tragic event that unfolded last week in Wentworthville, Sydney, a 26-year-old man lost his life after being shot by police. Authorities indicated that he and another man, 34 years old, were fired upon while allegedly driving a stolen vehicle directly towards the officers.
The New South Wales (NSW) police reported that the shooting incident occurred around 12:10 PM on Friday, following a call regarding a stolen car in a parking lot in Wentworthville, situated in Sydney’s western suburbs. Officers fired their weapons when the vehicle was said to have approached them aggressively.
Law enforcement was able to locate the two men thanks to an in-vehicle tracking device, which allowed police to respond promptly with assistance from the vehicle’s owner, later identified as the husband of Labor MP for Penrith, Karen McKeown.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers provided first aid to the injured men until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived. Both men were transported to Westmead Hospital, where the 26-year-old was reported to be in “very serious” condition, while the 34-year-old was in serious but stable condition. Tragically, the younger man passed away in the hospital on Wednesday.
Officials confirmed that none of the five officers present during the incident were injured. Among them, three officers discharged their firearms and are currently cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
The investigation is being led by a critical incident team from the state crime command’s homicide squad and is subject to an independent review.
In a statement following the incident, MP McKeown disclosed that her home had been broken into the night before, resulting in her husband’s car being stolen—an incident she reported to the police promptly. “While I am shaken by the events, thankfully, I am unharmed,” she shared.
She expressed her gratitude towards the NSW police, particularly the local area commands in Penrith and Cumberland, for their swift response. “Political leaders often praise police for their bravery. Today, I have had a first-hand experience of this,” McKeown reflected.
