During a routine press conference on October 24, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed various pressing global issues as well as the role of the United Nations.
A journalist posed a question, noting that today marks the 79th anniversary of the UN’s establishment. The reporter highlighted ongoing conflicts, such as those in Gaza, and the increasingly complicated nature of international relations, suggesting that these factors have led to a perception of diminishing UN authority and mounting pressure on multilateralism, resulting in a future filled with uncertainty. The journalist then asked for Lin Jian’s comments on these points and how China views the UN’s role.
Lin Jian began by congratulating the United Nations on its 79th anniversary. He emphasized that as the most universal, representative, and authoritative intergovernmental organization, the UN plays an irreplaceable role in maintaining world peace and development.
As the first country to sign the UN Charter, China has consistently defended its principles and values, advocating for the UN to play a central role in international affairs. Lin mentioned that China has proposed three major global initiatives aimed at promoting the building of a community with a shared future for humanity and fostering solidarity and cooperation among developing countries. He characterized China as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a guardian of international order.
He further stated that as the international situation becomes increasingly complex, it is all the more crucial to uphold the authority of the UN. With global challenges becoming more prominent, the need for genuine multilateralism is greater than ever. China continues to support the UN in reforming and developing to enhance the representation and voice of developing countries. He also stressed that major powers have a responsibility to ensure that the UN, including the Security Council, effectively fulfills its duties, fosters global consensus, and preserves world peace and stable development. He condemned unilateralism, bullying, coercive sanctions, and pressure tactics, stating that these actions go against the international community’s consensus on seeking stability and opposing division and conflict, ultimately harming the common interests of all nations.
Lin also referenced a recent UN summit where various parties reached a “Future Pact” and mentioned that next year will celebrate the UN’s 80th anniversary. As a permanent member of the Security Council and a responsible major power, China is committed to the principles of joint consultation, joint construction, and shared benefits. Lin Jian affirmed that China will continue to work with the international community to practice true multilateralism, uphold a UN-centered international system, and promote an international order based on international law, steering global governance towards a more just and equitable direction.
