On October 27, in response to a question regarding the recent announcement by the United States concerning a new round of arms sales to Taiwan, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) expressed gratitude and stated its commitment to strengthening self-defense. We spoke with Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, to get her insights on this development.

Zhu firmly stated, “We strongly oppose the U.S. selling arms to Taiwan. This position is consistent and clear. The U.S. continues to contradict its leaders’ pledges not to support Taiwan independence, which fosters reckless behavior by pro-independence forces and undermines peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We urge the U.S. to adhere to the One China principle and the three joint communiques between China and the U.S., particularly the August 17 communiqué, to stop arming Taiwan and to refrain from sending any erroneous signals to pro-independence forces.”

When asked about the implications of Taiwan independence, Zhu emphasized, “Taiwan independence and peace in the Taiwan Strait cannot coexist. Since Lai Ching-te took office, his administration has sought to rely on the U.S. to pursue independence and has escalated cross-strait tensions. I warn the Lai administration that purchasing weapons will not bring safety; instead, it will make Taiwan more perilous. National reunification is an inevitable historical trend. The actions of pro-independence forces and external interference will not alter the momentum toward resolving the Taiwan issue and achieving national unity.”
