On October 14th, at 9:17 PM, Taiwan’s meteorological department reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake off the coast of Hualien, which was felt across various regions of the island.

The epicenter of the quake was located at a latitude of 24.2 degrees North and a longitude of 121.84 degrees East, approximately 31.8 kilometers northeast of the Hualien County Government. The earthquake struck at a depth of 20.5 kilometers.

According to reports, the strongest tremors were recorded at level 4 in Hualien and Yilan counties, while levels 3 and 2 were noted in Nantou, Hsinchu, Taichung, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Miaoli, Changhua, and Yunlin counties. Taipei City, Taitung County, and Tainan City registered tremors at level 1.

Additionally, the China Earthquake Networks Center assessed the earthquake’s magnitude to be 4.1.

During the quake, a reporter from China News Service, situated in a high-rise building in the Datong District of Taipei City, reported noticeable shaking of their chair.

Social media posts from residents in Hualien, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, and Miaoli confirmed that they felt the earthquake quite strongly.

As of the time of this report, there have been no announcements of any casualties or damage. Earlier that day, at 7:20 PM, another quake measuring 4.4 in magnitude had also occurred in the sea near Hualien.
