During an interview, we learned about the recent Fifth New Hua Water Wine and Second Shangmei Ancient Town Food Culture Event held from October 18 to 20 in Xinhua County, Loudi, Hunan Province. Industry experts, scholars, and entrepreneurs gathered to sample the unique Xinhua water wine and savor delicious Meishan cuisine.
Xinhua water wine has its roots in the Tang and Song dynasties and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Once a staple in every household, it is said that “no feast is complete without wine, and no celebration without joy.” The Meishan Spring variety of Xinhua water wine ranks among the earliest types of ancient brewing wines globally. Additionally, Xinhua is celebrated as the “hometown of Chinese yellow rice wine.” Crafted from high-quality glutinous rice and natural spring water from the Snow Peak Mountains, Xinhua water wine embodies a production philosophy that harmonizes with nature, resulting in a unique local specialty with distinctive ingredients and craftsmanship.
In recent years, Xinhua County has prioritized water wine as a key vehicle for preserving local culture while driving rural revitalization and the integration of the wine and tourism industries. A leadership group was established to oversee industry development, along with the implementation of supportive policies and comprehensive development plans. This ambitious approach has reinforced guidance, nurtured leading enterprises, and focused on brand creation, forging a path toward high-quality development for the water wine industry.
Currently, Xinhua County boasts over 20 enterprises with production qualifications and more than 2,000 small workshops. Among these are six municipal leading enterprises, which together produce an annual total of 23,000 tons and generate sales of 1.01 billion yuan. The products have gained popularity, reaching more than 20 provinces across China and extending to Southeast Asia and other international markets. Notable brands, such as “Taolinyuan,” have emerged, with “Shengjiao Pure” recognized as a famous trademark in Hunan Province. The “Taolinyuan” brand was awarded a gold medal at the 15th China International Agricultural Products Trade Fair, while “Xinhua Glutinous Rice Water Wine” received the National Geographic Indication Certification trademark, solidifying Xinhua water wine’s status as one of China’s three major yellow wine varieties.
During the event, organizers also launched the “Xinhua Water Wine Group Standards.” This new standard outlines terminology, product classification, requirements, hygiene standards for production processes, inspection rules, labeling, packaging, transportation, and storage guidelines, providing a unified technical benchmark for the production and processing of Xinhua water wine.
