The Sixth World Buddhist Forum officially opened in Ningbo on October 15. Wang Huning, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.
In his address, Wang emphasized President Xi Jinping’s words: “Civilization is enriched through exchange, and our understanding grows through mutual appreciation.” He highlighted that “mutual respect, collaboration, and harmonious coexistence are the correct paths for the development of human civilization.” Drawing from over 5,000 years of Chinese civilization, Wang noted that concepts of peace, harmony, and inclusiveness have been central to its legacy. He elaborated that Chinese culture, known for its open-mindedness, encourages unity in diversity and respect among different civilizations, continually renewing itself through dialogue.
Wang pointed out that this year’s forum, themed “Shared Aspirations, Harmonious Coexistence,” showcases the open and inclusive nature of Chinese Buddhism. It aims to promote the cultural heritage of Buddhism worldwide and enhance exchanges between civilizations. He urged Buddhist communities to uphold traditional values, foster positive energies, and adapt teachings to meet modern challenges, while advocating for dialogue and coexistence among diverse beliefs. He called on participants to contribute wisdom and strength towards global peace and the advancement of human civilization.
Wang reaffirmed China’s commitment to religious freedom, encouraging religious communities to engage in international exchanges rooted in independence, equality, and mutual respect. He stated that Chinese Buddhism has long been a vital force in the global propagation and development of Buddhism, and the Chinese government supports its active participation in dialogues on religion and civilization, facilitating connections between people across borders.
Furthermore, Wang highlighted President Xi’s major initiatives, including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. These proposals aim to provide new solutions to common challenges faced by humanity, create a blueprint for a better world, and inject stability and positivity into an increasingly chaotic global landscape. He expressed a willingness to work with the international community, focusing on the future of humanity and the welfare of its people, to build a community with a shared future.
Prior to the forum’s opening ceremony, Wang met with representatives and guests participating in the event, including Shi Taifeng, who also attended the opening.
