Zhangye Dafo Temple is situated in the southwest corner of Zhangye City in Gansu Province, with its origins dating back to the first year of Yong’an during the Western Xia Dynasty in 1098. At the heart of the temple lies the largest indoor wooden clay reclining Buddha in Asia. This serene figure rests its head on a lotus pedestal with eyes gently closed, exuding an aura of tranquility and peace.

Behind the main hall, the sutra repository still houses some rare treasures, including a hand-copied edition of the “Heart Sutra” from the Ming Dynasty and the most well-preserved official edition of the “Northern Canon.” These ancient texts were allegedly discovered within the walls of the repository during renovations, though it’s unclear who hid them there throughout the dynasties. Regardless of their origin, these artifacts have become cherished treasures for future generations.

In May 2023, the “Digital Preservation Project for the Immovable Cultural Relics of Dafo Temple” was officially launched, with plans to complete and open a digital exhibition hall between May and October 2025. This immersive experience will allow visitors to engage more deeply with the cultural richness of Dafo Temple, inviting them to listen to the stories of the ancient Silk Road.
