On the evening of October 9, the Philadelphia Chinese Community celebrated the successful revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen with a gala at the Eastern Pearl Restaurant, marking the 113th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China and Double Ten Day. Attendees included Director Li Zhiqiang and Public Minister Zhang Lixian from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, along with six other members. The event also welcomed Chen Zhi, the honorary advisor of the Chinese Community, Chairman Lin Xing, and Mai Peng, alongside leaders from traditional Chinese organizations such as the Anliang Business Association, Xiesheng Association, and Hongmen Zhi Gong Tang, as well as representatives from various organizations in Chinatown, totaling over 400 guests comprising government officials and dignitaries from both Eastern and Western backgrounds.
The celebration kicked off with a lion dance ceremony, which was both vibrant and symbolic. During their speeches, Chen Zhi, Lin Xing, and Mai Peng expressed gratitude to the attendees, reflecting on Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary spirit that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, pioneered democratic movements, and fostered livelihood, democracy, and freedom—significantly altering the course of history and ushering the Chinese nation into a new era. They emphasized that, as descendants of the Huang and Yan clans, the Chinese people should unite beyond political ideologies and religious beliefs to collaboratively build a brighter future, wishing for greater harmony for the Chinese nation.
Li Zhiqiang highlighted Philadelphia’s historic connection as the birthplace of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, noting the similarities between Sun Yat-sen’s “Three Principles of the People” and America’s founding ideals. He affirmed a commitment from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office to support the community and looked forward to fostering connections between the local Chinese community and various sectors.
Speeches were also delivered by prominent figures such as Xu Fuqun, President of the Anliang Business Association; Chen Wei, Chair of the Pennsylvania Asian American Commission; Que Guangxian, Director of the Philadelphia Office of International Affairs; Xiao Qijin, Executive Chairman of the Northeast Development Association; Xiao Qingji, President of the Asian League; City Councilman Mark Squilla; and David Oh, President of the Pennsylvania Asian Chamber of Commerce. They all commended the Chinese Community’s contributions to the local area.
Additionally, Que Guangxian presented a congratulatory letter from Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, and Xiao Qijin delivered a greeting from City Councilman Mike Driscoll, recognizing the positive impact of the Chinese community in Pennsylvania.
The evening concluded with lively entertainment, featuring performances by leaders from the Xiesheng, Anliang, and Hongmen associations, who sang “Chinese Nation.” Dance troupes such as Huanyuan, Wuyi, and Wuduo Jinhua showcased their talents, filling the venue with applause and cheers from an energized audience. The gala was hosted by Zhang Shanxing, Mai Zhibin, and Wang Tangde, ensuring a festive atmosphere throughout the event.
