In a recent interview, jazz pianist Liu Dongfeng shared exciting news about his collaborative project with Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba. Together, they have released a dual piano jazz album titled “China Afro Cuba” in New York, featuring eight iconic Chinese classical compositions, including “Jasmine Flower,” “Yellow River,” “Butterfly Lovers,” “High Mountain and Flowing Water,” and “Chasing the Moon.”
The album has been globally distributed by the Grammy Award-winning label ZOHO MUSIC. Liu explained that this collaboration marks Rubalcaba’s first venture into recording Chinese music, which he sees as a testament to their friendship and mutual respect. “His unique interpretation of music brings a special charm to this album,” Liu noted.
He went on to emphasize that “China Afro Cuba” represents a groundbreaking encounter between Chinese music and Afro-Cuban jazz, showcasing a perfect fusion of contemporary jazz and traditional Chinese sounds. “This album opens up a new language for Chinese music on the global stage and innovates a fresh musical style within jazz,” he remarked. “It imagines a world without borders, filled with limitless possibilities, and offers a new exploration of traditional music.”
This isn’t Liu Dongfeng’s first foray into Caribbean-influenced music. In his 2018 album “China Caribe,” he began to explore the connections between Chinese music and the Caribbean. This ongoing journey reflects his passion for blending different musical traditions and cultures.
